Six years later and after much fundraising by the Gunning community, Upper Lachlan Shire Council welcomed the final funds needed to build the Gunning Skate Park in the form of a grant for $90,004 from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust.

Through considerable community consultation, the design of the Skate Park was chosen by Gunning youth and the concrete structure was installed adjacent to the children’s playground in the Gunning Showground. The project included important safety measures like the new fencing, gates and signage. The amenity was enhanced with a pram ramp, pathway to the skate park, two covered picnic benches on cement pads and a bin. Careful design, planning and community consultation has meant the skate park caters for all youth including skaters, Rollerbladers, bike and scooter riders of all ages, levels and abilities. Groundwork for the Skate Park was commenced in February 2016 and the opening was held on 4 June 2016. Council ground staff worked during July and August to complete the landscaping on the Skate Park site.

Ms Linus Nesbitt-Hawes, grant/projects officer with Upper Lachlan Shire Council said “this project has built important, positive links between the community and the Council. The success of the project has been enhanced by constant community consultation and liaison with, not only the original proponents of the project, but also the wider community including Gunning children, youth,  parents and any interested parties.”

“Parents at the opening ceremony commented that the addition of the skate park has created a ‘fun park’ in the Gunning Showground and they have enjoyed watching their children using the new facilities in the skate park. The skate park is very busy on weekends as youth from Canberra travel to Gunning to use the new facility.”

The Veolia Mulwaree Trust is pleased to support Upper Lachlan Shire Council and the community of Gunning with the construction of this well utilised Skate Park and looks forward to the local community and visitors to Gunning enjoying the facility for many years to come.
